While living in Uganda, Jo-Ann and a team held consultations with Ugandan children living with disability to understand the challenges faced with inclusion. Based on the experiences shared, a hopeful story was written encouraging inclusivity in sport. The story is called “It’s My Turn to Play” and is distributed throughout schools and non-profit organizations all over Uganda.

Jo-Ann Bateman is a strategic leader with over fifteen years of experience spanning a variety of sectors such as healthcare, non-profit, small business and international development in both Canada, Uganda, Egypt and Zimbabwe. With a Master of Science in International Health Leadership, she specializes in data-driven learning and adaptation, program design and evaluation, and strategic and operational planning.
Throughout Jo-Ann’s career she has worked in leadership in multiple industries including hotels and property management, veterinary services, medical devices and healthcare. Her passion for improving organizational performance was further shaped during her tenure as Director of Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) for USAID-funded programs in Uganda, Egypt, and other countries. She has led large-scale program assessments, designed strategic initiatives, and influenced policy development in global health.
While working at Footbridge Centre for Integrated Orthopaedic Care, Jo-Ann leveraged data analytics and process improvement strategies to reduce patient wait times for orthopedic consultations from 18 months to just 2–4 months. Her ability to translate insights into actionable strategies has made her a sought-after advisor for organizations looking to optimize operations and improve service delivery.
Beyond healthcare and international development, Jo-Ann has a strong passion for small business success. Even while living in Uganda, she supported small enterprises with strategic planning, operational structuring, HR policy development, marketing, and financial sustainability. As the founder of Canada-Uganda Sport & Exercise Medicine, she led a capacity-building initiative that trained over 250 Ugandan healthcare practitioners in musculoskeletal medicine.
